18-year-old Man Utd defender promoted to first-team training for first time ahead of Bournemouth

Given that Jonny Evans, Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, and Victor Lindelof are all on the injured list, Manchester United is now dealing with a bit of an injury issue in their defense. In light of this, Jack Kingdon, 18, has reportedly been promoted to first-team training in advance of their match against Bournemouth this coming weekend, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Due to injuries on Erik ten Hag’s squad, young talent Willy Kambwala has been thrust into senior action over the past few months. Kingdon might be the next player from the academy to make a big impact after his recent performance against Liverpool attracted the attention of many in the football community.

Jack Kingdon Promoted to Man Utd First-Team

He could feature against Bournemouth

Kingdon will practice with the senior team on Friday before their Premier League match against Bournemouth on Saturday night, according to the Manchester Evening News. The 18-year-old has made 21 appearances for the academy so far this season, but given the Red Devils’ back-row injury problems, there’s a potential he will now see first-team play.

Man Utd’s academy has received a lot of praise this season; players like Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, and Kambwala have all made an impression on the first team after spending time in the youth setup prior to making their first-team debuts.

It would be difficult to expect Kingdon to start for the Manchester team ahead of their pivotal Premier League matchup against Bournemouth on Saturday as the Red Devils attempt to retain their hopes of qualifying for Europe, but even just being a part of the senior squad in training will hopefully help Kingdon’s development.

Kingdon is obviously well-liked in the academy; in fact, several of his teammates praised the young defender following an FA Youth Cup victory back in December. “What a player,” said Tyler Fletcher in response to Shea Lacey’s “some performance” comment on his Instagram.

Shea Lacey Also With Man Utd First Team

The 16-year-old trained this week

Lacey is another who is being given an opportunity to express himself in the United first-team of late, with the 16-year-old recently spotted in training with the senior squad. On the call-up, BBC’s Alex Turk has gone into detail about the young talent, stating that although it would be a surprise if he broke through this season, he’s not miles away…

“A breakthrough this season would surprise me after his lengthy injury, but he’s not miles away. One of the points strongly in Erik ten Hag’s favour. He’s been absolutely brilliant with his management of academy talents.”

It’s an excellent sign for the club that there are a host of academy stars waiting in the wings to develop into players capable of featuring for ten Hag’s first-team squad.
