On a chilly afternoon at the JobServe Community Stadium, Colchester United hosted Bradford City in a pivotal League Two clash, with both teams fighting for vital points in the mid-table scramble. The match ended 2-1 in favor of Bradford, a result that would have pleased manager Mark Hughes as it helped to maintain their momentum in the playoff hunt. For Colchester, however, the loss added to a growing list of disappointing results, as they continue to struggle for consistency.
From the outset, Bradford showed the sharper edge in attack. Despite Colchester’s early possession, the visitors took control with some fluid passing and effective pressing. Bradford’s first goal came in the 19th minute when forward Andy Cook latched onto a precise cross from the right wing and slotted the ball past Colchester keeper Sam Hornby with a calm finish. The U’s were left chasing the game and struggled to create meaningful chances, with their best opportunity coming through a long-range shot from Matt Jay that went wide.
Colchester’s defensive vulnerabilities were once again exposed when Bradford doubled their lead in the 56th minute. A well-timed pass from Richie Smallwood found Cook in space, and the striker made no mistake, drilling the ball into the bottom corner for his second goal of the afternoon.
The U’s responded with greater urgency after conceding, and a late surge in the final 20 minutes gave them hope. Substitute Noah Chilvers tested Bradford goalkeeper Harry Lewis with a powerful strike, but it was only a brief glimpse of Colchester’s potential. In the 82nd minute, they were rewarded for their persistence when Freddie Sears pulled one back with a header from a corner. However, despite pushing for an equalizer in the closing stages, Colchester’s efforts proved fruitless, and Bradford held on for all three points.
This defeat leaves Colchester with much to reflect on, while Bradford will look to build on this vital win as they aim for a playoff spot.
