NCAA Golf Highlights: Day 1 of the NB3 Collegiate Match Play

The first day of the 2024 NB3 Collegiate Match Play kicked off with intense matchups, featuring top collegiate golf programs in a unique round-robin format at Twin Warriors Golf Club in New Mexico. Teams from Stanford, Texas, New Mexico, and New Mexico State clashed in men’s and women’s competitions, with both individual and combined university champions to be crowned. The event, sponsored by the Notah Begay III Foundation, showcases both male and female golfers from each university competing in twosomes, adding a layer of strategy and teamwork to the typical match play structure.

Morning matches saw teams competing over 36 holes, with Stanford facing off against New Mexico, and Texas battling New Mexico State. In the afternoon, the teams switched opponents, with Stanford facing New Mexico State and New Mexico taking on Texas. Each individual match contributes to the overall university score, emphasizing the importance of both men’s and women’s performances to determine the combined team champion. Standout performances came from Stanford’s women’s team and Texas’s men’s team, positioning both schools as strong contenders.

The format rewards each match win with a point, and half-points are awarded for ties. Should teams be tied in points at the conclusion of the round, a sudden-death playoff will determine the winner, adding to the drama of the competition. The inaugural NB3 Match Play highlights both individual excellence and team cohesion, pushing players to perform under the unique pressures of match play golf
