Interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy believes Amad Diallo’s recent spell on the bench served as a catalyst for his impressive performance as Manchester United’s Europa League hero. After being named as a substitute in six consecutive matches, Amad seized his opportunity when he was finally granted a start against Greek side PAOK at Old Trafford.

Van Nistelrooy praised the 22-year-old for his game-changing display, stating that Amad was “our best player in the first half” and ultimately “won us the game in the second.” The Dutchman noted that the time spent on the bench may have lit a fire in the young forward. “Apparently so,” he responded when asked if the series of substitute appearances acted as a motivator.

In a match where United faced limited opposition, Amad’s aggressive style of play stood out. He posed the primary threat to PAOK’s defense, showing a willingness to take on defenders repeatedly and maintain his attacking efforts even when his initial attempts went unrewarded. The Ivory Coast international’s relentless drive to break down the opposition highlighted his determination and skill.

Reflecting on United’s performance, Van Nistelrooy admitted that the first half had been challenging, with numerous technical errors and only one shot on goal. Yet, Amad’s energy and resilience helped turn the game around in the second half, setting the stage for United’s victory. “The second goal had everything in it that is Diallo,” Van Nistelrooy explained. “He fought to win the ball off the defender, then pushed through to take the shot, and had the quality to bend it around the goalkeeper.”

This goal underscored Amad’s qualities as a player who combines physical strength with technical finesse. Beyond his on-field capabilities, Van Nistelrooy also spoke highly of Amad’s character and work ethic. According to the United manager, Amad consistently shows up to training with a focused attitude and a desire to improve. “He shows that attitude in every training session,” Van Nistelrooy said. “Every day, he comes to me wanting to work on extra finishing, crossing, one v ones. He’s always asking how he can improve his shot and his heading.”

Such dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed by the club. Although Amad’s current contract is set to expire next June, United holds an option to extend it for an additional year, and Amad himself has expressed his intention to remain at the club “for a long time.” His commitment to improving and his drive to succeed have made him a valuable asset, both in training and in competitive play.

With Ruben Amorim set to take charge as United’s new manager next week, Amad will soon have another opportunity to impress a new leader. Van Nistelrooy hinted at the professional handover process, noting that both he and Amorim are focused on their respective current responsibilities. “I think that Ruben focuses on [Sporting at] Braga and I focus on Leicester [in the Premier League on Sunday],” Van Nistelrooy commented, signaling a temporary divide in attention as both coaches prepare their teams for upcoming matches.

Amad Diallo’s rise to the spotlight underscores the potential that was waiting to be unlocked. If his recent performance is any indication, this time on the bench has only strengthened his resolve. His work ethic and passion may well set him on the path to becoming a mainstay in Manchester United’s starting lineup.
