Beau Hossler Shares the Reason Behind His Two 5-Irons at the Shriners Children’s Open

Beau Hossler’s golf bag holds some intriguing surprises. Following in the footsteps of fellow PGA TOUR player Wesley Bryan, who carries two 4-irons, Hossler has opted for two 5-irons in his own configuration.

He refers to one as his “specialty 5-iron” and humorously mentions that he uses it to “play tricks on people.” While having two 5-irons might confuse his playing partners, there’s a practical reason behind this choice.

Hossler prefers his irons to have a bit of offset at address, which has led to the dual 5-iron setup. “Aaron Dill at Titleist bends a little bit of offset into all my clubs,” Hossler explained during the 2024 Shriners Children’s Open. “He put some offset into my wedges and irons. The reason for the second 5-iron is that since it has a shorter hosel, there’s less leverage to bend offset into it. So, we take a 5-iron head, strengthen it down to a 4-iron loft, which naturally increases the offset. It’s at 4-iron length, has a 4-iron shaft, and effectively has a 4-iron loft, but it just says ‘5’ on top. It’s essentially my 4-iron, and on par 3s, it’s fun to see if guys can figure out which 5-iron I’m hitting.”

Hossler’s iron setup is a mixed bag: he uses Titleist 620 CB short irons (7-9), Titleist T100 mid-irons (5 and 6), and a Titleist T200 5-iron. He also customizes the weight and feel of his clubs with lead tape, applying it himself to achieve his desired specifications.

“I have quite a bit of lead tape on my clubs,” Hossler said. “I’m hands-on with my equipment. I like to check it myself and see it with my own eyes. It’s not due to lack of trust; I just feel more comfortable when I do it myself. I’ve been involved with my equipment for the last three or four years, and it’s a fun little project for me. There’s a shop near my home where I’ve been using the same equipment for a while, and I feel comfortable with it. It’s more about checking and balancing; I usually pop in there for 15 minutes to make sure everything is dialed in. Generally, stuff doesn’t move more than half a degree, but it’s nice for peace of mind to know exactly where you’re at.”

This week at the 2024 Shriners Children’s Open, Hossler is competing with his two 5-irons in tow. Currently, he sits at 65th in the FedExCup Fall standings after achieving three top-10 finishes in 2024, including a runner-up finish at the Sanderson Farms Championship.
