PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks have hired Brian Kaplan as their new pitching coach, a decision that introduces a fresh perspective to the team’s coaching strategy. Kaplan’s journey to this role has been non-traditional; unlike most pitching coaches, he has never pitched in the Major Leagues. Instead, Kaplan made a name for himself in the sports performance industry, co-founding Cressey Sports Performance in Florida—a popular training facility among MLB players.
Kaplan’s expertise in biomechanics and athlete conditioning drew the attention of MLB clubs, leading him to consult for the Philadelphia Phillies. Impressed with his innovative approach, the Phillies later appointed him as their assistant pitching coach in 2022, where he contributed to the development of their minor league pitchers and helped extend the durability and effectiveness of their starting rotation.
As he steps into his role with Arizona, Kaplan is focused on implementing a collaborative approach to maximize player health and performance. Working closely with the team’s medical and strength staff, he intends to tailor individualized training programs for each pitcher to enhance their stamina and keep them healthy throughout the season.
“There’s a lot of complex information in the game,” Kaplan explained, “and biomechanics is becoming more essential in understanding how each pitcher moves and what makes them unique. Every pitcher is a little different in how they’re built and how they throw. By strengthening relationships with the strength and training staff, we can gain valuable insights into what each pitcher needs to perform at their best.”
Kaplan’s work with the Phillies helped redefine the role of starting pitchers. Under his guidance, Philadelphia’s rotation consistently ranked among the top in MLB for innings pitched, allowing starters to average nearly six innings per game. This was particularly beneficial for the bullpen, which had a lighter workload as a result. Arizona, by contrast, struggled with injuries in its rotation last season and was unable to match those innings. However, with a talented roster that includes veterans like Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, and Eduardo Rodriguez—all capable of pitching deep into games—the Diamondbacks hope to see a similar transformation under Kaplan’s guidance.
“We did a really good job building strong, durable starters with Philadelphia,” Kaplan said. “I see a lot of potential here with the Diamondbacks’ rotation, and they have more depth than many other organizations. I’m excited about the possibilities we can achieve together.”
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo emphasized that Kaplan’s collaborative approach is a major asset to the team. Lovullo believes that Kaplan’s background, particularly his transition from off-season performance coaching to in-season MLB coaching, will enable him to communicate effectively with players and staff.
“Kaplan is going to take our collaboration with the sports medicine and conditioning teams to a new level,” Lovullo stated. “His background makes him uniquely qualified to connect with the players and the different departments. With the complex nature of today’s game, it’s crucial to deliver clear, simplified messages to the players. Kaplan has a knack for this, and I believe he’ll be instrumental in helping us succeed.”
For Kaplan, developing strong relationships with the players is a priority, and he intends to spend the offseason getting to know the pitchers before spring training begins. He sees this time as an opportunity to understand each player’s motivations and personal goals in a low-pressure environment.
“The offseason is a great time to learn what makes each player tick,” Kaplan said. “By building that connection now, I’ll be better equipped to support them through the season’s challenges.”
With Kaplan at the helm of the pitching staff, the Diamondbacks aim to elevate both the health and performance of their rotation, laying a foundation for a competitive season ahead.
