Erik ten Hag will want to repeat £20m Ajax masterclass for Man Utd this summer – opinion

Erik ten Hag has the chance to repeat one of his best transfer deals with Ajax this summer amid Manchester United’s hunt for a striker.

As everyone knows, Manchester United’s first priority this summer is adding a striker to their roster.

Erik ten Hag will be eager to bolster this position as one of his four priorities during the transfer window.

The people in charge of transfers this summer are pursuing players like Ivan Toney in an effort to strengthen the position.

But given what’s happened in Europe lately, there’s another possibility that would make Ten Hag lick his lips.

He could even be able to replicate an impressive move he made at Ajax.

Manchester United should consider signing Gianluca Scamacca

Gianluca Scamacca, of course, is the striker we are referring to. He thrashed Liverpool in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The Atalanta striker stunned everyone by scoring two goals to dash Jurgen Klopp’s dreams of winning a European championship and establish himself as a hero at Old Trafford.

He has reverted to the form he displayed at Sassuolo prior to his move to London Stadium since leaving West Ham for Atalanta last summer.

This is his season-long performance.

Gianluca Scamacca stats 2023-2024

Competition Games (minutes) Goals Assists Minutes per G/A
Europa League 7 (425′) 5 0 85′
Serie A 23 (1087′) 8 3 98′
Italian Cup 3 (72′) 0 0 N/A
Combined 33 (1584′) 13 3 99′
As per FotMob.

Scoring or assisting every 99 minutes is pretty impressive.

His all-round game is also something to be impressed by as he has all the skills required to be a Premier League striker.

Due to this, United shouldn’t be put off by his struggles at West Ham, especially with Ten Hag’s history of helping players who’ve struggled under David Moyes.

Erik ten Hag will relish the opportunity to repeat Sebastien Haller’s revival

For large sums of money, West Ham has a lengthy history of signing strikers who fall short of expectations.

With Sebastien Haller, the greatest arrival in Hammer history, it was a similar tale.

Haller, who cost £45 million when he signed, never quite fit in with the Irons and left for £20 million to play for Ajax, where Ten Hag was the coach.

Before being traded to Borussia Dortmund, Haller was amazing under the United manager, netting 47 goals and dishing out 16 assists in just 66 appearances.

Ten Hag will thus be thinking about if he can accomplish same results by giving Scamacca another shot in the Premier League at United, given the way he’s now tearing it up.

It’s a move which wouldn’t break the bank, unlikely to be above £30m and one which many fans would welcome.
