After seven consecutive wins, FC Barcelona’s impressive run hit a roadblock in a 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena. The Catalans have been in such strong form that they seemed nearly unbeatable, but Sunday brought them back to earth in a venue where they had remained undefeated in their last eight visits. Despite the loss, Barça still sits comfortably atop the Liga standings, though their lead over Real Madrid is now trimmed to six points, with Madrid holding a game in hand.
The game’s tone was set even before kickoff when young star Lamine Yamal was pulled from the lineup due to fitness issues. As it unfolded, it became clear that Real Sociedad was the stronger side on the night. Although Sociedad’s season has had its ups and downs, they used this match to make a statement, dominating the best chances and creating the bulk of opportunities. It was undoubtedly their day—not Barça’s.
VAR Controversy
Barcelona has been caught offside more than any other team this season, and they found themselves at odds with VAR once again. A brilliant long ball from Pau Cubarsí, who wore a protective mask, connected with Robert Lewandowski, who scored clinically. However, VAR ruled the play offside, though it was unclear exactly where the infraction lay. The decision left Barça frustrated and searching for answers.
Becker Strikes
On a rain-soaked pitch, Barcelona struggled to find their usual precision. Goalkeeper Iñaki Peña made several saves before eventually being beaten in the 33rd minute. Surinamese international Sheraldo Becker seized on a headed pass from Luka Sucic to put Real Sociedad ahead.
Though Real Sociedad had only one prior home win this season, they played with an intensity that suggested otherwise. Takefusa Kubo, nicknamed the “Japanese Messi,” repeatedly broke through Barcelona’s defense, with Iñigo Martinez often left to clean up. Barça could consider themselves fortunate to trail by only one, as Real Sociedad threatened to widen the margin with several clear chances.
Resilient Defense
Barcelona, who had been breaking through defenses with ease in recent weeks, struggled against Sociedad’s compact backline. Barça’s final passes and shots lacked their usual precision; in fact, this was the first time since 2014 that they failed to record a shot on target and the first time in 30 games they didn’t score.
Hansi Flick had cautioned against expecting brilliance in every game, and this seemed to be one of those rare off nights. Despite a tiring team, Barcelona fought hard for an equalizer as Real Sociedad defended tenaciously. The closing minutes were filled with Barça’s relentless pressure, but Álex Remiro and the Sociedad defense held strong. Ultimately, Barcelona enters the international break with just their second league loss of the season.
