Liz Young captured her second Ladies European Tour title with a thrilling one-shot victory at the Hero Women’s Indian Open, edging out Manon De Roey and overcoming a close leaderboard battle.
Starting the day one shot behind De Roey and fellow Briton Alice Hewson, Young posted an even-par 72 to secure the win at DLF Golf & Country Club in Delhi. Hewson struggled in the final round, finishing tied for 11th after carding a seven-over 79, including a triple-bogey on the 18th.
De Roey shot a two-over 74 to share second place with Singapore’s Shannon Tan (69), France’s Agathe Sauzon (69), and New Zealand’s Momoka Kobori (70), each surging up the leaderboard on the last day.
Young’s only birdie came at the par-five 15th, tying her with De Roey. A bogey from De Roey at the 17th then gave Young the lead. A play-off nearly ensued when Young’s third shot at the 18th found the water, but she salvaged a bogey with a precise wedge shot from the drop zone. De Roey couldn’t convert from short of the green, sealing Young’s victory.
“I’m in shock,” said the 42-year-old Young. “It’s my second win, but it’s as important as any other. Wins are rare in professional golf. Manon is a close friend, and it’s tough to compete against her. She had a win earlier this year, so this was my turn!”
Reflecting on her round, Young noted the importance of putting and her caddie’s assistance in reading greens. “I didn’t hit it great all day, but putting was key. On 18, I hit a bad lay-up, then went in the water by inches. Fortunately, I could play a shot I was comfortable with and hit it close. I just knew I needed to make that putt!
