Man Utd planning ‘audacious’ swoop for Premier League star who could transform their attack

Manchester United are reportedly planning a swoop for a Premier League star who Arsenal also want to sign.

It has been a torrid season for the Old Trafford club as they are at risk of failing to qualify for European football.

At present, Erik ten Hag’s men sit eighth in the Premier League table, three points behind the likes of Newcastle United and Chelsea, who are occupying the remaining European places.

Looking ahead to the summer transfer window, it has been claimed that United could make an audacious move for Aston Villa star striker Ollie Watkins, who has enjoyed a brilliant season.

Unai Emery’s men secured their place in next season’s Champions League after Tottenham Hotspur failed to beat Manchester City on Tuesday night.

Watkins, 28, has played a major role this season having scored 19 goals and assisted 13.

As reported by talkSPORT, Watkins ‘fits the profile of the proven centre-forward’ that United’s new minority owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to sign to support the development of Rasmus Hojlund.

However, the report stated that a move could be difficult with Villa gearing up for a season in the Champions League.

In addition, the fact that Watkins signed a new five-year deal with the club last year makes it even more of a challenge.

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are also keeping tabs on Watkins as Mikel Arteta searches for an out-and-out goalscorer this summer.

On the back of his stellar season, Watkins was named Supporters’ Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season at Villa’s end-of-season awards.

Back in October, upon signing his new deal, Watkins said: “I feel like this is the best place for me to play my football; I’ve still got a lot to achieve here
