Sir Alex Ferguson has last laugh after Man Utd legend’s comments got ripped apart

Sir Alex Ferguson has had the last laugh after Aston Villa cemented their place in next season’s Champions League by securing a top four Premier Leaguefinish. The Manchester United legend was ridiculed after extolling Unai Emery’s side last August in the aftermath of their 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Newcastle.Villa entered the campaign with optimism after impressing last season following Emery’s appointment in November 2022. But they were thumped by the Magpies at St James’ Park on the opening weekend of the season as Alexander Isak netted a brace for the home side, with Sandro Tonali, Callum Wilson and Harvey Barnes also getting their names on the scoresheet and Moussa Diaby hitting Villa’s only goal.

Many pundits reassessed their expectations of the west Midlands giants after the final whistle had blown. But Ferguson later told NBC Sports: “To be honest with you, I watched Aston Villa and I can’t believe the scoreline. Honestly Aston Villa played fantastic football and just lost to bad goals.

“Newcastle are going to be very difficult to beat, in their own ground in particular, and their manager has done a great job there. It’s a surprising game, football. You can play teams off the pitch and not score – that’s what Aston Villa did.”
