WR Deebo Samuel Sr. Returns to 49ers HQ as Cowboys Week Kicks Off

The San Francisco 49ers released their Wednesday injury report, listing nine players who were either sidelined or limited in practice due to injuries. Left tackle Trent Williams was the tenth name but was out only for a veteran rest day. Earlier in the day, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk (ACL, MCL) was officially placed on Injured Reserve, and both Deebo Samuel Sr. (wrist/illness) and Jauan Jennings (hip) were listed as non-participants in the team’s first practice of the week. This leaves San Francisco without its top three wide receivers heading into “Sunday Night Football” against the Dallas Cowboys.

Despite the setbacks, there’s optimism regarding Samuel Sr.’s recovery. After being hospitalized with pneumonia Sunday night, his condition seems to be improving.

“He’s out of the hospital,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said. “He was here yesterday. He’s doing better than expected, and we’ll see how he progresses throughout the week.”

Shanahan also mentioned that Samuel Sr. has a chance to play Sunday. His illness significantly impacted him in Week 7, where he suited up against the Kansas City Chiefs but played only four offensive snaps due to symptoms, and he was ruled out for the second half of the game.

Veteran wide receiver Chris Conley, the remaining healthy option on the 53-man roster, is also dealing with an ankle sprain sustained against Kansas City. He was limited in Wednesday’s practice.

With the team’s top receivers sidelined, the 49ers will rely on younger and rookie wideouts to step up in the final game before their Bye week. The group includes first-round pick Ricky Pearsall, fourth-rounder Jacob Cowing, and second-year receiver Ronnie Bell.

One standout rookie this season has been guard Dominick Puni. He’s started all seven games so far, stepping up after injuries to Spencer Burford and Jon Feliciano early in training camp.

“You try to tell stories like that to these guys,” Shanahan said. “Never assume it’s a redshirt year. In this league, there’s no such thing. Whether you’re a rookie or on the practice squad, you’re often just one injury away. Sometimes it’s two. You’ve got to be ready when your number’s called.”
